Content Warnings Protocol for Digital Archival Material

If you encounter harmful or distressing content in material stewarded by TARC in the Tufts Digital Library or Archives@Tufts that does not have a content warning, or if you have questions about this policy or our work, we welcome your feedback. Please email us at archives@tufts.edu, call us at 617-627-3737, or fill out our feedback form

TARC holds materials that may be distressing to users, such as materials that document violence or hate speech. When making these materials available online through the Tufts Digital Library and Archives@Tufts, TARC endeavors to place content warnings to allow users to decide when and how to engage with the items.

Content warnings may be communicated in various ways, including explication in item-level description fields on individual objects; the use of “cover images” in front of distressing images, audio, or video; and/or notes in the collection’s finding aid.

The presence of content warnings are not an indication of the item’s availability for use in research, nor do the presence of content warnings serve to restrict an item’s availability.
